MacKenzie's Activities

We registered MacKenzie in Toddler's on the Move and the Duck swimming lessons at Lakewood Civic Center. She does Toddler's on the Move on Sunday mornings and swimming on Monday afternoons. The instructor for the Toddlers on the Move has no clue how to control 2 and 3 year olds. She even said so out loud. I couldn't believe it. She didn't even have much structure or discipline with the parents. She was very young..maybe 17 or 18..definitely didn't have any children.

I figure that if you are going to run a class with ten 2 and 3 year olds, you should be a little more prepared. Some people have commented to me as to how a person can control that many young children of that age. I figure..and this is just my opinion..that if you structure and discipline the parents to discipline their children, it will help people stay focused on each activity, and teach the children some discipline (not sure if that is the right word for what I am trying to say).

See..what happened was the instructor tried an activity, and some kids just "felt like doing their own thing", some of the parents just let them. So you had half of the kids participating in the designated activity, and the other half all doing their own things and running around. It is supposed to be a structured and instructor led class. It just drove me crazy to see how unorganized and uncontrolled it was. I figure that if the instructor were to tell the parents to keep their children at each activity as planned, then things would have went a lot smoother, and the kids would have enjoyed themselves more. I mean, you can't force a kid to do an activity, but at the same time..it is a class, and so they shouldn't be able to run free to do what they want. I think it just ruins it for the rest of us who are trying to teach our kids how to take turns at each activity, learn new skills (with things I might not have access too) and that we do things at certain times...whether they like it or not. Cause we do that in life..like bedtime is bedtime, and meal time is at meal time..not just whenever and wherever.

I would really like to offer this girl some suggestions. I've been known to take control sometimes, and sometimes my opinions come off as controling (even though thats not how I mean it). So I am just not sure if it is appropriate to offer her some suggestions to make things run smoother, to help benefit MacKenzie, and the other kids, or if I should just keep my mouth shut. I'm very confused on this, cause I am paying money for my child to have a structured play time. If I wanted MacKenzie to just run free and do her own thing, I could do that at home for free. ANY ADVICE ANYONE?????

The swimming lessons went exceptionally well..MacKenzie even put her face in the water...well actually I dunked her..lol. But she never choked on the water..which I was surprised about. Rick came and took some pictures, I just haven't uploaded them to the computer yet. I can't wait to see what is in store for next week.

I'd talk to the organizer of the class, or who ever hired this girl to do this class. That way u can express ur dissatisfaction and maybe even get a discount, or get someone to teach this young girl how to run the class, that way you don't come off as controlling!

i have heard that about that class before...i actually don't think i've heard anything positive ever! unfortunatly. but you are paying for this, and deserve to get your money's worth. i would voice your concerns FOR SURE!

and i wish i had known you were signed up for the DUCK class! Kamryn's supposed to be in that class but i've been waiting until someone i know signs their kid up! that would have been tons of fun to have swimming with you guys!

Michelle, thats a good idea, maybe I will come see the recital. I don't think MacKenzie is old enough for that yet. She is only 2. But its definitely something for me to think about. Do I get a discount cause I know you? lol.
